merc denial
I recommend we keep all the mercenaries in our hands by coordinated outbidding of the vets. My strategy doesn't have a rigid early recruitment so I can go first and take whomever is available first turn unless someone else really wants them. 300+ should have them.

Re: merc denial
Mercenary denial is an interesting sort of strategy. Although I would be disinclined personally to hire some of them, like the city guard, or urgek beast-brother. If we see the elephant corps, yeah, we should make sure we pick them up. Black fists, farstrikers, etc. And if we see mage mercenaries, those are definitely high priority. But we should pick and choose which ones to take rather than buying all of them no matter what. Or at least, that's my take

Re: merc denial
Yeah I think what I meant was let's coordinate bidding so we aren't working against each other and bid high to keep it out of their hands.

Re: merc denial
Yeah, we can definitely work with that. Making sure not to bid on mercenaries over each other would be particularly important.
I'm not going to be surprised if the vets try doing this too... so we'll have to be careful about evaluating mercenaries.

Re: merc denial
I'll be looking for atleast one merc unit early on to help me out. Otherwise I might only be using archers for awhile

Re: merc denial
I'm going to be recruiting largely horse archers, but my god autosummons heavy infantry every turn so I'll have a screen for them also I'm not really going to need mercenaries as such... I may go in for the mage mercenaries, though.

Re: merc denial
Once I get my money production up as Man, I can focus on stealing a lot of the mercenaries, since I will sit on a lot of excess gold.

Re: merc denial
This will probably work fairly well early on, but if you get the chance build additional castles whenever possible. It will help deny territory to the vet team and let you make troops/mages faster But if you want to work on mercenary grabbing you can probably do a reasonable amount of that.

Re: merc denial
Ferdinando's Footmen for 160. This is 30 heavy infantry I think (I've played LA very little). Who wants it?
Starting at 300?

Re: merc denial
I'd like to give ulm first shot at them. After that, I think I don't want to drop all the cavalry I want for them, so the other three flank guards have their pick. After that I don't care

Re: merc denial
I have no experience with mercs. Are these at all useful? They'd be stopping me from going for my pile of rangers to begin with.

Re: merc denial
Iirc it's a company of 30ish heavy infantry. Correct me if I'm wrng. Anyway, heavy infantry mercs are at least useful for taking on idependants and can often take several provinces even with no backup. Depending on the targets.

Re: merc denial
I didn't put in a bid for them, can't afford that and recruiting a mage at the same time.
If people really think I should, I could resubmit.

If you don't want them you don't have to get them. But we do want to keep at least the better mercenaries out of the hands of the vets, so we're figuring out now who gets to do it this turn.

Re: merc denial
I'm not taking them. I need to buy a black priest, and that leaves me with only 230 to try to hire them.

Alright. Pyg, you're next in line for the job. Do you want them?

No, I have the expansion phase covered. I was hoping someone else wanted them. Any other takers?

Re: merc denial
Well, if no one speaks up soon I guess I'll go for it, the mage I'm buying is only 100g and that leaves me exactly the 300 we were looking at for mercenary purchase. But if I end up with neither the mercenaries nor the my cavalry next turn that will be a bit frustrating.

Dagan the sage is up for grabs. Do NOT let the vets have him. This merc is anyone's game, so don't be shy to bid.

Re: merc denial
I'm pretty sure he's your basic sage, something like astral 1 7 research. Luckily I don't have to guess, I can go check that thread on the forum.
Yeah, he's a sage. He may have a little extra experience though raising his research a bit.
